how to improve performance with metabolic testing

 I Want To…

Fuel & Hydrate Better

Stop guessing how much to drink, how much sodium you need, or why you’re cramping.

Our Sweat Test creates a personalized hydration roadmap based on your sweat rate and sodium losses, helping you perform better while reducing dehydration, GI issues, and race-day surprises.

Train Smarter & Perform Better

Know exactly how hard to train, when to push, and how to fuel your workouts.

Our VO₂Max & lactate testing measures your physiology so you can build personalized training zones, improve endurance, optimize fueling, and train with confidence instead of relying on generic formulas.

Understand Your Fitness & Longevity

Get beyond generic calculations  and discover what your body needs to thrive.

Our Metabolic Health Testing helps you understand your metabolism, body composition, and key health metrics so you can make confident decisions about weight management, healthy aging, and long-term performance.

Sweat Testing for Athletes

Stop guessing how much fluid and sodium your body actually needs.

If you’re struggling with cramping, GI issues, fading late in workouts, or constantly switching electrolytes and sports drinks hoping something finally works, your hydration needs may be different than the generic recommendations you’ve been following.

Sweat testing gives you personalized fluid and sodium recommendations based on your body…so you can train and race with a hydration plan you feel confident in.

“Chris and the entire team at The Endurance Edge are awesome! Their testing helped to unlock the problems I faced on my long runs. Their recommended strategies along with a custom hydration formula has dramatically improved my performance. I wish I had done it sooner!”

Sweat Testing May Be Right for You If…

  • You cramp, fade, or feel lousy during longer or hotter workouts.
  • You deal with nausea, sloshy stomach, GI distress, or other hydration problems.
  • You’re a heavy or salty sweater and aren’t sure how much sodium you actually need.
  • You’ve tried different sports drinks, electrolyte products, or online recommendations but still aren’t confident you’re getting it right.
  • You’re training for a marathon, triathlon, cycling event, Ironman, or another endurance goal and want a hydration strategy specific to you.

You don’t need another generic hydration recommendation. You need to know what your body loses and what to do about it.

What Will You Learn From a Sweat Test?

You’ll leave knowing:

  • How much fluid you lose during exercise so you can better replace what your body actually needs.
  • How much sodium you lose so you can stop guessing at electrolyte amounts.
  • How to build your hydration plan around your training, racing, conditions, and goals.
  • Which hydration products or strategies fit you whether that’s commercial products, real food, DIY options, or a combination.
  • How to actually use your results, with a 30-minute consultation with our Registered Dietitian and Hydration Specialist.

We don’t hand you numbers and send you home.

We interpret your results with you and help you turn them into a practical hydration strategy you can actually use in training and on race day.

Even better? You get to use our Hydration Edge app to continue to refine your hydration plan based on sport, intensity and weather conditions, so you’ll always have a plan, no matter what you do.

What Happens During a Sweat Test?

  1. You work out.
You’ll exercise for approximately 20-60 minutes at our Cary facility using our treadmill, your bike on our trainer, or outdoors (or at your own home or field).
  2. We collect and analyze your sweat.
You’ll wear simple gauze patches while exercising so we can collect and analyze your sweat. No needles involved. Unlike testing methods designed for cystic fibrosis screening, our protocol collects sweat while you’re exercising to provide information relevant to your athletic hydration needs.
  3. You get your results.
We’ll determine your fluid and sodium losses and provide personalized hydration recommendations.
  4. We help you put them into practice.
During your consultation, we’ll help you understand what your numbers mean and how to apply them to training and racing. Plus, you’ll get 1 month of our Hydration Edge App included so you can put your personalized recommendations into practice as your training, workouts, and conditions change.

“I cannot thank the Endurance Edge team enough for helping me to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the Marathon! I approached Chris at the Endurance Edge after experiencing electrolyte issues around mile 19 of the 2019 California International Marathon. In less than four weeks, I had an individualized hydration and fueling plan that I was CONFIDENT in. This made all the difference and resulted in an 8+ min PR, and Olympic Trails Qualifying time at the 2020 Houston Marathon. I highly recommend the Endurance Edge for your individualized hydration, fueling, and recovery plans! Thank you!”

“I kept bonking/cramping…despite using generic online recommendations, and ultimately even ChatGPT, to try to nail down carbohydrate and sodium intake. Testing and discussion of results was an eye opener and has given me significantly more insight into what I was missing and how to more appropriately tailor my nutrition, as well as giving me tools to track and reassess over the coming months.”

Metabolic VO2Max Testing for Athletes Performance & Fueling

Stop relying on estimated training zones and generic fueling formulas.

Your watch can estimate your VO₂Max, heart rate zones, calorie burn, and training intensity.

But estimates aren’t the same as knowing what’s happening in your body.

Our metabolic performance testing uses VO₂Max, ventilatory thresholds, lactate threshold, and body composition testing to help you understand how your body responds to exercise so you can train at the right intensity, fuel appropriately, and make your workouts count.

“I thought I was doing everything right—eating clean, training hard, following all the “rules.” I believed the formula for max heart rate was universal… boy, was I wrong. The testing and personalized guidance I received from Chris completely reframed how I approach my training and recovery. It explained so much about why I hadn’t seen the forward motion I’d been chasing in my running and overall fitness.”

Metabolic Testing May Be Right for You If…

  • You’re following heart rate or power zones but aren’t sure they’re actually accurate for your physiology.
  • You want to train smarter without simply adding more volume or intensity.
  • You want to know how many carbohydrates you need at different exercise intensities.
  • You keep fading, bonking, or experiencing GI problems during longer workouts or races.
  • You’re trying to improve your VO₂Max, endurance, pace, power, or overall fitness.
  • You want objective data to track changes in your fitness over time.
  • You’re training for a marathon, triathlon, cycling event, Ironman, or another endurance goal and want your training and fueling strategy based on your body instead of population formulas.

You already have plenty of data. The question is whether you’re using the right data to make better training and fueling decisions.

What Will You Learn From Metabolic Testing?

You’ll leave knowing:

  • Your personalized training zones. Using lactate and/or ventilatory thresholds, we’ll identify the heart rate, pace, or power ranges that make the most sense for your training.
  • Your VO₂Max. Understand your current aerobic capacity and establish an objective metric you can track over time.
  • How your body uses fuel at different intensities. See how carbohydrate and fat utilization change as exercise gets harder.
  • Your personalized fueling needs. We’ll translate your metabolic data into practical carbohydrate recommendations for training and racing.
  • Your body composition. Get additional context for performance, health, and realistic body-composition goals.
  • How to actually use the results. We’ll help you understand what your numbers mean and how to apply them to your training and fueling.

Because knowing your VO₂Max isn’t enough.

A number is only useful if you know what to do with it.

We interpret your results and turn them into practical training and fueling recommendations you can use in your workouts not another report that gets filed away and forgotten.

Your sweat test tells us what you’re losing while you exercise.

Combine both with our Endurance Hydration & Performance Package for our most comprehensive endurance testing option, including VO₂Max, lactate threshold, sweat sodium testing, body composition, and personalized fueling and hydration recommendations.

What Happens During Metabolic Testing?

  1. You exercise.
You’ll complete a graded exercise test on our treadmill or your bike, with intensity gradually increasing throughout the test. Depending on the testing you choose, steady-state testing may also be available, or a more specific protocol you or your coach chooses.
  2. We measure how your body responds.
During VO₂Max testing, you’ll wear a metabolic mask while we measure oxygen consumption and other physiological responses. For lactate testing, we’ll take small blood samples from your ear at specific exercise intensities.
  3. We analyze your results.
We’ll identify metrics such as your VO₂Max, ventilatory and/or lactate thresholds, training zones, and fuel utilization depending on the test you choose.
  4. We help you use the data.
We’ll immediately discuss how to apply your data to your training, fueling and performance goals. You’ll receive your results uploaded through our portal within 72 business hours after completion.

“Highly recommended for improving running performance, by setting correct heart rate zones (and getting excellent advice on the same). I was frankly surprised at the lactate threshold HR I needed to hit, as well as the importance of training at that level. I wish I had done this years ago.

Your metabolism, fitness, body composition, and energy needs are personal and they can change with age, training, lifestyle, and other factors.

Our metabolic health testing gives you objective information about how many calories your body needs, your aerobic fitness, body composition, and strength so you can make more informed decisions about nutrition, exercise, weight management, and long-term health.

The goal isn’t simply to collect more numbers. It’s to understand what those numbers mean for you and what to do next.

“Very worthwhile experience (VO2 Max test) professional, helpful, knowledgeable, fun – feedback discussion extremely beneficial for future workout planning / goals. Money well spent!”

Metabolic Health Testing May Be Right for You If…
