From Broke Grad Student to Ironman: Coach Carlie’s Journey

From Broke Grad Student to Ironman: Coach Carlie’s Journey

In this Find Your Edge podcast episode, Coach Carlie shares her remarkable journey from a “broke graduate student” to a multi-time Ironman finisher, which has changed her life completely.

Starting from humble beginnings, Carlie was a broke grad student who couldn’t afford a gym membership. She started her fitness journey with running, a sport that only required a pair of sneakers. Her decision to take on the “big, scary goal” of doing an Ironman, despite not knowing how to swim or bike, encompasses her determination and willingness to push her limits.

Long Course Mental Training

Carlie also dives into the mental skills required to face and overcome physical challenges, offering insights into her dissertation on post-Ironman blues and tips on coping with the psychological slump that often follows major long course races. This psychological slump that many athletes face after major races is often overlooked, but Carlie provides practical tips on how to cope with it. She suggests that having something to look forward to after the race, whether it’s another event or a personal milestone, can help mitigate the post-race blues.

Coaching Philosophy

Carlie shares her coaching philosophy, which is based on communication and consistent training plus the importance of recovery. She enjoys helping athletes find joy in their training, even amidst their busy schedules. She takes a personalized approach to coaching, focusing on building confidence and creating a supportive community for her athletes. Triathlons can be a lonely sport, and Carlie’s empathetic coaching style helps athletes feel less isolated and more motivated. She shares heartwarming stories of unexpected milestones achieved by her athletes, emphasizing the joy that comes from overcoming personal challenges and the “journey” rather than overly focusing on the finish line. Get a behind-the-scenes look at what makes a coaching relationship successful, as well as some heartwarming stories of unexpected milestones achieved by her athletes.
