The Best Gifts for Triathletes

November 10, 2014/in Gear, Triathlon

By Chris Newport, Nutritionist and Head Coach

Besides the fact that we’d all love to get a new PR (or a shiny new bike) under the Christmas tree, here’s some of our favorite gifts for triathletes, from stocking stuffers to big ticket items.

Gotta, Gotta, Gotta Get a Garmin

If you’re a triathlete without a heart rate monitor, we’re pretty sure you might be living under a rock. It’s one of the best ways to gauge intensity, although keep in mind that since heart rate is a response, there’s some lag time in how quickly your respond. Regardless, if you need help with pacing, this is a great way to go. You can use one that’s very general (could be worn in all three disciplines), specific to running (with GPS) or specific to cycling (with GPS).

Power Meter

Power is where it’s at. Without a doubt, it’s the best tool for the most efficient cycle training. I wish all my athletes could have one. But they’re pretty dang pricey, which is why they’ll make your favorite triathlete fall out of their chair when you get one. When I did my thesis, we had one installed in the rear hub. But you can now have it in your pedals or crankset like this one. Another option is to get a trainer or computrainer with one built in for someone who rides indoors. Once you get it, read Training and Racing with a Power Meter or get a coach to help you!

Cycling Shorts

How awkward is it when your favorite riding buddy tells you that he can see your crack? Seriously, dude. It’s time to ask Santa to bring you some new shorts. Protect thy nether regions with an awesome chamois. Sugoi, Gore, Pearl Izumi and Castelli are some of my favorites. Definitely don’t skimp here. A great pair of shorts will have a contoured, higher quality chamois and better fabric and compression.

TRX

TRX

This is our favorite tool for being able to train at home or while traveling. You can get a high intensity interval workout or a good stretch with this simple tool that fits in your carry-on and attaches to your door. TRX has some great workouts for endurance training here.

Vitamix

This thing will blend your hand off. No kidding (but please don’t try it!). Which means it will do an amazing job at crushing ice, making salsa, heating soups, mixing hummus, and blending smoothies. We use ours (the 5200) at least twice a day. The home models are BPA-free. The S-30 is a personal blender that’s perfect for one or to take with you to work. If you have low hanging counters, you can get the compact container.

Transition Bag

Triathlon involves a lot of stuff. Have you noticed? Remembering everything on race day seems like half way to a miracle some days. Then there comes the near heart attack when you’ve forgotten your most treasured binky item. Trust me, it’s happened to me. So getting everything into one bag is the best way to go. This one has served me well over the years.

Coach and/or Nutritionist

Why not get the most out of your (limited) time and all your (very expensive) equipment by investing in a coach? Sure, this is a shameless plug (and yes, we offer gift certificates in any denomination!), but it’s truly worth it to have a professional (USA Triathlon certified, preferably) guiding you through frequent communication, daily workouts and inspiration. If you already have a coach (or don’t want one), why not hone your nutrition so you can finally finish a race without countless trips to the port-o-john?

Recovery Bliss

We’re always hunting for the latest recovery tools. Besides good ol’ fashioned time, you can ask for the stick, a foam roller, or recovery tights (here’s the men’s version and the women’s version). Massage therapy gift cards are always welcomed too.

Bike Part Art

Velo Bling Designs and Resource Revival recycle old bicycle parts into super cool gifts, art work and more. How about a cool bottle opener, luggage tag, or wall clock made out of recycled chains? Or maybe a necklace or cuff links? Super rad, I’d say.

Feed Zone Portables

Hands down my favorite resource (besides Pinterest) for eating real food during activity.

Race Entries

Have you seen what an Ironman costs these days? Sheesh. Luckily, there’s some great local companies (including FS Series, Jones Racing and Set Up Events) who put on some great events throughout the year. Who wouldn’t want a free race entry in their stocking?

So what are you asking Santa for this Christmas? Let’s hear it!
