Recovery Strawberry Chia Acai Bowl

August 17, 2018/in Recipes, Recovery, Sports Nutrition

By: Sarah Heckler, MS, RD/LDN, CISSN

After every workout, I make sure I have a recovery shake with whey protein and colorfuel necessary for adequate recovery. Colorfuel replaces glycogen lost during exercise and whey protein aids in rebuilding muscle. Normally, I stick to a simple smoothie but one day I decided to have some fun with my food and make an acai bowl.

Strawberry Chia Acai Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 packet Acai (Trader Joe's has prepackaged options)
  • 1-2 handfulls Frozen spinach
  • 1/4 cup Frozen strawberries
  • 1/4 cup Frozen pineapple
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein I used NOW Foods Whey Protein Isolate
  • water to desired consistency
  • 1-2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • strawberries to garnish

Instructions

  • Remove the frozen acai packet and place it under running water for 5 minutes, or until thawed.
  • Place the thawed acai packet, spinach, pineapple, strawberries, orange juice and water in a blender and blend until combined. Add as little or as much water as you would to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Once blended add in your whey protein and blend on low for 5 seconds. You will want to add the protein after everything is blended. If you add the protein at the beginning it will add a lot of air and double in size.
  • Once everything is blended, pour into a bowl and add in your favorite toppings. For this bowl I topped my bowl with chia seeds and sliced strawberries.
