How to Get a Great Bike Fit with Ben Turits

March 16, 2021/in Cycling, Podcast

Coach Chris meets with Coach Ben Turits from The Endurance Collective, who specializes in bike fit. What sets him apart is that he’s a massage therapist specializing in corrective exercise. With his background, he brings a bit of a different perspective to bike fit, or what he calls, a “fun detective game.”

What’s unique about Ben’s fit process is that he does a thorough movement assessment, before and after videos, bodywork and corrective exercise as part of the process.

(please forgive the Ben’s audio–it cuts in and out a few times, but hang in there!)

Ben and I discuss:
–>Why none of your bikes should be uncomfortable
–>Why you need MORE time to adjust to big adjustments
–>Why it’s important to know that fit is not just a one time thing and is a process
–>What to look for in a good bike fitter, including questions to ask (like experience in what type of riding/bike he/her will be fitting like tri/road/mountain)
–>Common issues that they see with bike fits, including scapular winging, tingling fingers, low back pain and numb feet
–>Why locked out elbows can be dangerous
–>Some of the fit trends that may work for the pros, but may not work for your body including aero bar drop, mountain bike bar width, etc
–>Crank arm lengths and why it may be better to go shorter
–>Ideal cadence and why going going too high or too low may be inefficient
–>How Ben and his team deal with leg length discrepancies and why it’s so rare

Ben mentions a local PT Brian Beatty, who you can learn about here, who has helped Ben and his team identify “where it is, it ain’t.”

Ben mentions Sep Vanmarcke’s fit, which you can see here.

Check out Ben’s last episode on our podcast with previous host Michael about collaboration here.

Ben’s takeaways are:
1) Get your bike(s) fitted
2) Understand that bike fit is dynamic and can vary based on your fitness and where you are in your cycling “career”
3) Ride what’s comfortable and ENJOY the ride!
