Racing Local: Why It Matters (plus NC multisport racing companies)

July 23, 2025/in Podcast, Triathlon

If you’re a triathlete in North Carolina—or anywhere looking for a great racing experience—local races are where it’s at. In this post, we’re diving into why racing local matters, how it benefits you and your community, and the top triathlon race companies in North Carolina to check out (including ours!).

Why You Should Race Local

1. Support Your Community

When you race local, your dollars stay in the community. That means you’re supporting small race directors, vendors, volunteers, and even local nonprofits. For example, our Humans of Steel Racing Company, hosted by The Endurance Edge, donates proceeds to Girls on the Run of the Triangle. It’s a way to give back while doing something you love.

2. Skip the Travel Headaches

No flights. No bike shipping. No hotel (unless you want one). Local races eliminate the stress of long-distance travel and logistics. You can usually pack up and leave the morning of the race. It’s more spontaneous and less of a time suck.

3. Build Your People

Racing local means seeing familiar faces, creating training partners, and growing your support network. Whether you’re part of a triathlon club or racing solo, local events build a sense of community and connection.

4. Practice Makes Progress

Local races are perfect opportunities to:

  • Test out your fueling strategy
  • Practice transitions
  • Fine-tune pacing
  • Gain confidence for bigger races like Ironman or Challenge events

They’re great stepping stones to bigger goals—or can be your main event!

5. Enjoy the Fun, Low-Pressure Vibe

Let’s be honest—local races are just more fun. They’re typically less intimidating, easier to navigate, and filled with good people and great energy. You might even score some awesome post-race snacks and swag.

Best Triathlon Race Companies in North Carolina

If you’re looking to add some local races to your calendar, here are some of our favorites:

Setup Events: One of the longest-standing race production companies in the Southeast. They are beginner-friendly and extremely well-organized, plus have series awards.

Setup Events does it right!

Jones Racing Company: Mostly in the western part of NC but worth the drive. Known for scenic, athlete-friendly venues, great attention to detail, fun post-race vibes.

She Tris: Focused on empowering women through triathlon. Highlights include female-only races, pool swims (no open water!), great for beginners, events in both NC and SC.

FS Series: A fantastic mix of triathlon and running events. They’re known for variety of race distances, great local energy, ghe hilarious inflatable Rex mascot for post-race photos.

Even though it rained, FS Series still showed up!

Brick Endurance: These races offer well-marked courses and weekday races in North Raleigh (yes, you can race on a Wednesday!).

Whitewater Center: Located near Charlotte, these unique events feature trail runs and off-road options, paddling instead of swimming (“dry tri” format), affordable, in-house production.

OBX Triathlon: Held every fall at the beach—what’s not to love? Ocean swims, multiple distances (short to long), laid-back beach weekend vibe,

Trivium Racing: Based in Greensboro (and Michigan) with high-quality races across the state, great swag and well-designed courses, fun combo races like Nat Greene’s Triathlon, where you can race both road and off-road in one day!
