Why “Perfect” Morning Routines Don’t Matter — And What to Do Instead

December 4, 2025/in Podcast, Sport Psychology

There’s a lot of noise out there about the “right” way to start your morning. Cold plunges, journaling, sunrise meditation, gratitude tracking, forest bathing, workouts, sunlight exposure — the list goes on. And while many of these habits can be helpful, the pressure to do them all every day can leave us feeling overwhelmed, inadequate, or like we’re “failing” before the day even begins.

In this Find Your Edge podcast episode #121 with Coach Chris and performance consultant Coach Carlie, we explore this exact topic!

The Problem With “Perfect” Morning Routines

Somewhere along the line, morning routines became a competition. We were told that if we didn’t spend an hour optimizing our mindset, nutrition, body, hydration, and emotions before sunrise, then we must not be serious about our goals. But the truth? You don’t need a perfect morning routine to have a great day.

Start With What Actually Supports You

Your routine should reflect your life, your responsibilities, your values, and your energy — not someone else’s. Maybe your perfect morning is a cozy cup of decaf coffee. Maybe it’s a quiet moment with your partner. Maybe it’s simply sleeping long enough to feel good.

Ask Yourself These Questions

  • How do I want to *feel* when my day begins?
  • What small habit actually fills my cup?
  • Am I doing this because it benefits me — or because I feel like I “should”?

You’re Not a Navy SEAL — And That’s Okay

It’s inspiring to learn from high-performance individuals, but their routines are designed for their *lives*, goals, and genetics. Your goals and biology may be different — so your routine can be too. Wellness isn’t about force — it’s about alignment.

Build a Routine That’s Flexible, Not Fragile

The best morning rituals are ones that can shift — not ones that collapse the moment life gets busy. Start small. Start kind. Start with what feels grounding.

Final Thoughts

You are beautifully and wonderfully made — exactly as you are. Your morning routine doesn’t define your worth. Choose what supports you, and let the rest go.
